A Mile in Her Shoes: Opryland Christmas Edition

I’ve been negligent on posting for the “Mile in Her Shoes” series but I have not been negligent about taking my sister’s shoes far and wide.

In November, Racer K and I made a plan to spend all day at Opryland for their annual Christmas celebration. It’s been a tradition of mine since moving to Nashville to go out there to walk amongst the lights and it wasn’t until K and I started dating that I had someone to go with me. In 2014, they added ice skating and ice slides, so it sounded rather perfect.

The day was sunny and not too chilly: rather unexpected anytime after October for Nashville, where we experienced almost 6 months of grey each year. I loved living in Tennessee but the seasonal affective disorder (SAD) was pretty intense. That was one reason I chose Denver as our new home: more sunshine each year than Florida!

We started out by riding the ice slides. The tickets we bought gave us 10 rides each but we ended up only using two or three. Then we went ice skating. It was so much fun! We had never been before but since I was wearing roller skates since almost before I could walk, I took right to it. The rink was a bit wet from the warmer day and abundant sunshine but it was so lovely to go round and round on the ice, even if there were children not following the rules of the rink and so many people were wiping out. K was not as excited about the ice skating but he still stayed upright.

Then we went inside the hotel. If you’ve never been, it’s a rather large resort with several separate sections including one with waterfalls and another with lovely gardens full of orchids with poinsettias added for the holiday.

The hotel was well decorated, with lights strung everywhere and a good number of Christmas trees decorated in different ways.

They also decorate the front lawn of the hotel with beautiful lights, that they begin stringing up in July of each year, and a larger than life nativity scene.

We also had a luxurious steak dinner at the steakhouse to finish off our night. All in all, it was a super fun day. We made sure to hit the ice slides again on our way out.

Oh, and we found the cutest picture made by a local artist to eventually hang in our first home. It’s so far spent time packed away with our Nashville Hatch print but I can’t wait to get it hung in our home next year.

So, that was probably far more than a mile of walking, ice skating, and sliding in my sister’s cute pink shoes. I’m sure she would have loved it all. Especially the slide.
