More homesteading…

I feel at loose ends because it has been so long since posting and I’ve had so little to say. Except that there’s loads going on. We are ALMOST unpacked. I mean, it has been such a fun adventure unpacking boxes and saying hello to possessions I haven’t seen in a year. The only stuff pending unpacking now are primarily pictures that can’t be hung until the house is painted. Thus far, we’ve finished 3 of the bedrooms upstairs and one wall in the dining room. I should be painting now but you get to a point where you need a little break.

So, today, I hung up some items in the kitchen, did laundry, and began the makings of limoncello. Now everything smells of springtime lemons while it snows outside as it has been doing since Friday.

A lot of what is needing to be done requires another trip to Home Depot. I never thought I’d get tired of shopping but we’ve needed so much for the house that it has been endless trips to Home Depot and I’m a little tuckered out. However, we are changing all the ugly 1980s light fixtures left by the old owners and giving this place a sense of class.

I’ve spent the last week working alone here because K’s grandmother died a week ago and he had to go to Alabama. He’s currently flying home and he can deal with the current crisis: despite pest control, we’ve been having a minor (read: major) spider infestation. Multiple species of arachnid have taken up residence in our basement, so I’m unable (read: unwilling) to brave our bottom floor to do anything down there until I am certain there are no more 8-legged invaders. I don’t know how the previous owners could live with them around but we are doing battle like warriors and within the next month or so, our house will be pest-free.

Next up is getting quotes from Pella, Jeldwen, and Anderson windows to get some broken windows fixed and to see how much it will cost us to bring our egress windows up to code. Right now, they are built to 1970s standards, not 2016 standards that require much more space. Interesting how the obesity epidemic has changed building codes. BUT once our spider problem is handled, I can go into the basement and get things set up. I already have linens and bathroom items to put down there and I’ve already chosen a lovely comforter set that I haven’t purchased yet to make the basement a mountain-based seaside escape. We also still don’t have a bed but since none of our friends have provided dates of travel, I don’t have to worry about getting a mattress until I know when someone is actually incoming. Our first guests stayed in the basement before we had any notion of a spider problem and while they were a little chilly, they did well with the loads of blankets we were able to provide. Since they stayed with us only a few days after we moved in, I think we did well. Now I have baskets of items to care for our guests, and will eventually add some of the homemade limoncello and some of our canned oxygen… but first, we must rid the home of invaders.

So, that’s what’s up with the Tennessee Honeybee for now.
