If you ever have talked with me about mental health, you’ll know that I’m a huge proponent of therapy. For everyone. I’ve been in and out of therapy since ’00 and typically the “out” has only been after I move while waiting for the VA to finally assign me someone (I’ve lived in Denver for 17 months and I’m still waiting for my new assignment despite registering with the new hospital 4 months before moving).
So, here’s the thing: therapy is beneficial for EVERYONE. Not just when things are bad, though that’s definitely a help, but everyone could use one person they aren’t related to and aren’t sleeping with to help them sort through the mess in their lives. We all have some mental untidiness and healthy eating and exercise can only take us so far. Some get addicted to alcohol, or sex, or work, or some are dealing with mental issues like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Everyone can benefit from someone on their side. Everyone can benefit from someone who doesn’t have a stake in their lives telling them they are awesome, or even that their traveling down the right road, or just someone to listen to them cry without taking a text.
So, in summary, don’t be afraid to get help. Don’t be afraid to bring in a third party. Especially as we head into the holidays, don’t hesitate to look for support.
Also, if things get dire, never be afraid to ask for a lifeline.
