Antemasque Initial Reaction

The Mars Volta has been one of my favorite bands for the last decade. I was pretty much obsessed musically. Sadly, they parted ways and Antemasque is the new band composed of Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Flea, and Dave Elitch. Here’s what I have to say about the first two singles released (as I still grieve the end of The Mars Volta):
definitely stripped down musically when compared to TMV. Far more punk than jazz. Gritty but cohesive and, as ever, CBZ and ORL are a great combo, providing new and inventive ways of hearing music. I’m having a hard time really jiving with Hanging in the Lurch but 4am is working for my brain. Lurch sounds a bit too commercial for me coming from these guys. Flea is awesome as ever. I do miss the previous drummers who worked with TMV. Octahedron and Noctourniquet had some amazing drums whereas this sounds pretty straight forward. Looking forward to more from these guys. This definitely feels more punk and unpolished than TMV, but deliberately so.
