I’ve considered doing this previously but this year, I’m on track. I’m going to read 52 books this year. That equates to 1 a week but here it is 2 weeks into 2015 and I’m 8 books down. I thought I’d start listing the books and update this as I go. I’ll also give some comments as I go, so hopefully this will lead you to new books as well. Some of these books I’m getting through the Kindle First feature of Amazon Prime so they may seem rather random and I don’t have much to say for them other than they are generally easy reads.
- An Echo in the Bone (book 7 of the Outlander series)- Engrossing as usual but here entered some story lines that I wasn’t so fond of.
- Written in My Own Heart’s Blood (book 8 of the Outlander series)- a bit heavy on battle and kind of slow so I’m hoping book 9 gets back to the heart of things. Also, I’m wondering if it is coming time to end the series. How many dastardly enemies can fairly normal people have and how many times can someone be kidnapped in a family? There are some seriously repetitive tropes playing out.
- Buddhist Boot Camp- Always lovely to reconnect with basic Buddhist teachings
- Tinker- Kindle First book: cute steampunk adventure story. Enjoyable.
- Everything Burns- Kindle First book: AWFUL! Do not read this book. It was hard just to finish it.
- Flirting with Felicity- Kindle First book: fluffy romantic story but comes with some recipes at the end.
- Paper Towns- I really love John Green. I have two quotes by him hanging in my cubicle at work and that was pre- The Fault in Our Stars (which I read in completion night before my birthday last year and have recommended to my family, particularly in light of my sister’s death almost 6 months ago. Cancer is such a destructive force). Paper Towns was another lovely tale that kept me engrossed. Far less emotional than Fault. I’d recommend pretty much anything by him. Check out his vlog too!
- The Ocean at the End of the Lane- I was pretty blown away by this book but no surprise, it is Neil Gaiman after all. Read it in one sitting. A modern adult fairy tale, reminded me a bit of Raymond Feist’s Faerie Tale, which I enjoyed greatly when I was younger.
- Quiet- I haven’t quite finished this book about introverts because at the moment it’s a little less than the brain candy I want to fill my nights with. I’m slowly going through it though.
- The Fire Seekers (Babel trilogy 1)- This book was another Kindle First and it was so good, I’m going to buy the second book once it is released. Very smart, religious history based fiction with a fast paced story. If you like science and the study of religion, check this one out.
- Kitchen Confidential- First, I found this book used for $1.50. I was stoked! Second, yes, of course I’m reading it in Tony Bourdain’s voice! Third, my already powerful star crush on this man got even bigger. I’d love to be able to live his life (now, not the younger heroine addled years): eating, drinking, traveling, and generally having a good time plus having a great little family. Next up is Nasty Bits, so I’ll stay in Tony-land a bit longer. (I also love that I’m rounding out the end of the 1st month of the year and I’m already close to 1/4 of the way to my goal!)
- Nasty Bits
- The Mermaid’s Sister
- Wreckage
- Younger
- Gemini Effect- This was a pretty intense book to start and a bit more grotesque than I normally read. Let’s just say: don’t read a book about killer rats right before bed. However, it lost it in the end. Kind of like the author had a larger scope in mind for the book but got tired of writing and just threw the ending in there. Could have been better if it had been longer or a different ending.
- Trail of Broken Wings- Really good book but also, very sad.
- The Nightingale- Great story! Also have tissues at the end.
- 100 Days of Real Food
- DIY Gifts Box Set
- Growing Herbs and Vegetables from Seed to Harvest
- The Herb Bible- getting ideas for our future garden
- The Perfect Son
- Crow Hollow
- Women and Buddhism- a sweet gift from old friends.
- The Girl on the Train- currently reading. Might as well, everyone else is.
- Joss Whedon: The Biography- Really? It took me this long to get around to reading this? Me, the complete Whedonite?!? Excellent read! Also realized I’d already seen In Your Eyes though I hadn’t known at the time that it was written by Joss.
- Prairie Cookbook and Memories- Free cookbook with some simple recipes but the memories of life in the early 1900s was particularly interesting.
- The Good Neighbor- Pretty good but after reading The a Girl on the Train and watching Gone Girl, this genre is becoming predictable. Read it in one sitting.
- Just a Geek- in progress. Enjoying my geek reading. Had a huge crush on Wil during his TNG years, so this will be a fun read. Plus, this is book 30! 22 to go to hit my goal!
- The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up- Quite the life changer! I highly recommend it.
- The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep
- Pale Queen Rising
- Christmas in Good Hope
- Life and Other Near Death Experiences
- The Light Princess
- Room- difficult but worthwhile read
- Furiously Happy
- Not My Father’s Son- I adore Alan Cumming and this memoir was amazing!
So, I came in shy of my goal but I enjoyed my readings in 2015. I’m already behind in 2016 but I already have a list in mind already of books I want to read.
